چکیده
---------------------------------------------------------------------***-------------------------------------------------------------------Abstract In this study, a vertically integrated shallow water model is designed to estimate the water level due to nonlinear interaction of tide and surge associated with tropical storms along the coastal belt of Bangladesh. To develop the model, a fine mesh scheme, capable of covering all major islands, has been nested into a coarse mesh scheme covering up to 15N latitude in the Bay of Bengal. To incorporate accurately thickly populated small and big islands along with highly bending of the coastline along the Meghna estuarine region in the numerical scheme, a very fine mesh scheme for the region is again nested into the fine mesh scheme. Along the northeast corner of the very fine mesh scheme, the fresh water discharge through Meghna river is taken into account. The boundaries of the coast as well as of islands are approximated through proper stair step representation and the model equations are solved by semiimplicit finite difference technique using a staggered grid. The model is then applied to simulate the water levels due to the non-linear interaction of tide and surge associated with the storms SIDR and AILA. The model simulation was quite satisfactory, and then the influence of the offshore islands on the water level along the coast of Bangladesh was tested.

A CYCLONE INDUCED STORM SURGE FORECASTING MODEL FOR THE COAST OF BANGLADESH WITH APPLICATION TO THE CYCLONE `SIDR'
The coast of Bangladesh has a specialty in terms of high bending and many off- shore islands. Incorporation of the coastline and island boundaries properly in the numerical scheme is essential for accurate estimation of water levels due to surge. For that purpose a numerical scheme consisting of very fine mesh is required along the coastal belt, whereas this is unnecessary away from the coast. In...

Severe Tropical Cyclones associated with surges frequently hits the coastal region of Bangladesh. For a reliable hydrodynamic model to simulate the severity of such cyclones, it is necessary to incorporate the meteorological and hydrological inputs properly. In order to incorporate the coastlines and the island boundaries properly in the numerical scheme a very fine grid resolution along the co...

Soil salinity is considered as one of the major challenges in coastal agriculture in Bangladesh yet geographical extent of soil salinity and nutrients status have received little or no attention. This study investigated the patterns of soil salinity, total nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and sulfur between agricultural and fallow land along a 90 km distance from the coastline in Noakhali, Bang...

The study about the jacket platforms in the past has revealed that the most of the collapse failures occur due to the lack of strength of the pile foundation. However, when the jacket platforms which have been collapsed due to extreme condition were looked into, it was found that most of them had their foundations intact. These contrasting facts can be explained with the help of the phenomenon ...

Lack of access to energy is considered as a serious bottleneck for the socio-economic development of Bangladesh. Despite earning recognition for promoting solar home systems, most of the rural areas and remote islands of the country still remain non-electrified due to very high unit cost and low quality of electricity from solar home systems (SHS) coupled with only few hours of restricted usage...
